The Martyrdom and Legacy of Shaykh Dr. Saʿīd Ramaḍān al-Būṭī

The Life and Blessed Martyrdom of Shaykh Prof. Dr. al-Būṭī

In the annals of contemporary Islamic scholarship, few names command as much intellectual and spiritual respect as Shaykh Professor Dr. Saʿīd Ramaḍān al-Būṭī. A titan of Syrian Sunnī scholarship, he was a writer, a professor, and the beloved Imām of the historic Umayyad Mosque. Beyond his role as Vice-Dean at the University of Damascus, he was a guiding light for millions—a master of many sciences whose life was as profound as his final moments.

A Polymath of the Sunnī Tradition

Described by many as the “Ghazālī of the era” and the “Ashʿarī of the time,” Shaykh al-Būṭī was a rare gem in the world of knowledge. He was:

  • A Mutakallim (Theologian) of the highest caliber.
  • A refined Uṣūlī (Legal Theorist) whose depth was seldom matched.
  • A Ṣūfī in the pure tradition of the pious predecessors (Salaf al-Salih).
  • A Faqīh (Jurist) of vast, ocean-like knowledge.
  • A leading figure in Islamic neo-traditionalism, staunchly adhering to the four Sunnī Madhāhib and the orthodox Ashʿarite creed.

A Blessed Martyrdom: Final Acts of Devotion

The Shaykh’s departure from this world was a reflection of his lifelong service. In his final month, he stripped himself of worldly attachments, giving most of his clothes to his grandson to distribute to needy students. Just one week before his passing, he donated his entire accumulated wealth.

On March 21, 2013, on the night of Jumuʿah, the Shaykh received the gift of martyrdom. After praying Maghrib in Al-Īmān Mosque, he was in the middle of his regular Qur’anic Tafsir Halaqah, teaching 50 students. In a state of perfect Wuḍū’ and holding the Holy Qur’ān to his chest, he was struck. Witnesses saw him fall to the ground, prostrating (Sajdah) and facing the Qiblah.

The blood of the martyr splashed over the pages of his Qur’ān, specifically upon the Āyah of Sūrat Āl ʿImrān (3:39):

“Whilst he was still standing in the chamber offering the Prayer, the angels called out to him: ‘Indeed, Allah gives you the good news…’”
