Why is the city of tarim so blessed?
Following the passing of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the Muslim Ummah faced a foundational crisis. While many remained steadfast, several tribes across the Arabian Peninsula refused to pay Zakat or left the fold of Islam entirely.
However, amidst the turbulence in the region of Hadramaut of Yemen, one city stood as a beacon of unwavering faith: Tarim.
A Sanctuary Amidst the Storm
During the Caliphate of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr As-Siddiq رضي الله عنه, an army of Sahaba (Companions) was dispatched to Hadramaut to address the tribes that had turned away from their obligations.
The military leaders expected a widespread rebellion, but upon arriving in the valley, they discovered a remarkable anomaly. While neighboring villages had faltered, not a single person from Tarim had committed apostasy. The people of Tarim did not just maintain their faith; they became the backbone of the Muslim defense:
- They remained committed to the pillars of Islam and the leadership of the Caliphate.
- They opened their doors to the injured Sahaba, nursing them back to health and providing them with refuge during the height of the conflict.
The Three Prayers of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr
When the news of Tarim’s loyalty and their service to the Sahaba reached the first Caliph in Madinah, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه was deeply moved. In a moment of profound gratitude, he raised his hands and made three specific supplications (Duas) for the city and its people:
The Dua (Supplication)
1. That Allah put Barakah (blessing) in the water of Tarim.
2. That Tarim remain civilized and populated until the Day of Judgment.
3. That Allah cause the Ulama (Scholars) and Awliya (Saints) to grow like seeds from the ground.
The Manifestation Today
• Despite its desert climate, the water of Tarim is renowned for its spiritual and physical purity.
• Tarim has survived centuries of conflict and remains a vibrant hub of life and culture.
• Tarim is globally recognized today as the ‘hub’ of Knowledge and Tasawwuf, producing Hundreds of world-class scholars.
The Legacy of “As-Siddiq City”
Because of this historic connection and the transformative power of these prayers, Tarim earned the title “As-Siddiq City.” The impact of the third Dua, in particular, is visible to any visitor. Tarim holds a unique distinction that sets it apart from any other city on Earth. It is home to the highest concentration of the descendants of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ per capita. This means that Tarim possesses a larger proportion of Sayyids compared to any other place in the world. The city is home to the famous Zambal Graveyard, where it is said that over 10,000 Sahaba and countless descendants of the Prophet ﷺ are buried. Tarim has served as a sanctuary and a home for the Prophetic household for over a thousand years, preserving a lineage that continues to lead the community in both knowledge and spiritual guidance. The “seeds” Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه prayed for have grown into a forest of knowledge, with institutions like Dar al-Mustafa continuing to spread the light of Islam across the globe.
