Ocean in a Drop: The 448-Page Commentary on an 8-Verse Surah
Imagine writing an entire 448-page commentary on a chapter of the Qur’ān that consists of only eight brief verses. This remarkable achievement belongs to the illustrious 19th-century Indian Islamic scholar, ʿAllāmah Muftī Naqī ʿAlī Khān (d. 1297 AH). Celebrated in his time as Raʾīs al-Mutakallimīn (the Leader of the Theologians), his profound intellectual depth allowed him to extract vast oceans of meaning from brief divine texts.
A Dynasty of Knowledge and Courage
Muftī Naqī ʿAlī Khān belonged to an exceptional lineage of knowledge, spiritual devotion, and social leadership:
- His Father: ʿAllāmah Riḍā ʿAlī Khān was a distinguished scholar and a prominent figure who stood firmly against British occupation.
- His Son: He was the father of the world-renowned polymath and revivalist, Imām Aḥmad Riḍā Khān [Raḥimahumullāh].
His spiritual journey was deeply rooted in noble traditions. Muftī Naqī ʿAlī Khān took the spiritual path from Sayyid Āl-i-Rasūl Mārehrawī, who was a student of Shāh ʿAbdul ʿAzīz Dihlawī. Through these connections, his chain of transmission linked back to senior Arab scholars, including Sayyid Aḥmad Zaynī Dahlān, the Grand Muftī of Makkah.
A Polymath of Over 20 Sciences
A true master of Islamic scholarship, Muftī Naqī ʿAlī Khān excelled in more than 20 distinct disciplines, including Ḥanafī fiqh, tafsīr, ḥadīth, uṣūl al-ḥadīth, sīrah, ʿilm al-kalām, Persian, Arabic poetry, history, and taṣawwuf. Throughout his life, he authored 24 invaluable works that left an indelible mark on Islamic literature.
An Unwavering Devotion to the Sacred Lands
Beyond his academic brilliance lay a profound spiritual devotion. In 1295 AH, despite suffering from severe illness, Muftī Naqī ʿAlī Khān resolved to undertake the journey for Ḥajj. When well-meaning companions advised him to postpone the journey due to his failing health, his response reflected his deep love for the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:
“I wish to step out of the door with the intention of visiting Madīnah Tayyibah; then it does not matter if the soul departs immediately.”
Muftī Naqī ʿAlī Khān passed away in the month of Dhū al-Qaʿdah, leaving behind a legacy of scholarship, courage, and love for the Divine. As his ʿurs falls on the final day of Dhū al-Qaʿdah, we commemorate his remarkable life and contributions.
