The noble shaykh who memorized 1,00,000 hadiths!
The history of Islamic scholarship is adorned with figures who combined vast intellectual prowess with deep spiritual devotion. Among the most luminous of these “Pearls” is Imām ‘Abd-Allāh Sirāj al-Dīn al-Ḥusaynī, a man whose life was a testament to the transformative power of Prophetic love.
The Sharpness of Intellect
During his time at the Khusrawiyyah Institute, the Imām’s teachers were mesmerized by the sharpness of his intellect and his boundless capacity for learning. He consistently remained the top student across all subjects, frequently surpassing those many years his senior.
This dedication did not pause when the school doors closed. During summer holidays, he would devote himself entirely to the memorization of ḥadīths. Eventually, he committed to memory all the narrations within the major six books (al-Kutub al-Sittah) and many thousands beyond.
The Title of al-Ḥāfiẓ
His nephew and son-in-law, the renowned Shaykh Dr. Nūr al-Dīn ‘Iṭr, estimated that the Imām had memorized at least 80,000 ḥadīths, though many contemporary scholars believe the number exceeded 100,000. It was this monumental achievement that earned him the prestigious title of al-Ḥāfiẓ.
A famous story illustrates the sheer scale of his memory. Two of his close students were once engaged in a heated quarrel. In the heat of the moment, one man made a bold oath: “If the Shaykh has not memorized more than 100,000 ḥadīths, then my wife is divorced!”
Seeking clarity and fearing for his marriage, the two men rushed to the Sha’bāniyya Madrasah to ask the Shaykh directly. After a moment of quiet reflection with his head lowered, the Imām looked up and reassured the man:
“You have not divorced your wife. But I strongly advise you to distance your tongue from uttering words of divorce and forbidden speech!”
Mercy in Law, Strictness in Self
As an expert Ḥanafī faqīh and a spiritual master of the Rifā‘ī order, the Imām maintained a beautiful balance in his practice of the sacred law. He was known to follow the strictest fatāwā (legal rulings) for his own personal life, yet he consistently provided the general public with the easiest and most merciful rulings from across the four schools of fiqh.
A Deep and Intense Love
Despite his mastery of tafsīr, creed, and ethics, Imām ‘Abd-Allāh was most famous for his profound and radiant love for the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ. This was not merely an academic appreciation; his students mentioned that he was frequently blessed with the vision of Rasūlullāh ﷺ, both in his dreams and while awake.

A Lasting Spiritual Legacy
The Imām authored more than 30 books, covering the spectrum of Islamic sciences, with a particular focus on the noble manners of the Messenger ﷺ.
